Default Hail M'Lord & Ladies, If i might ask a few questions

Hail All:
just a few quick questions at this point. I just downloaded the trial and have played about a hour and the game feels good, My mmorpg exp was EQ1 for 7 years then a 3 year break and then my son talked me into playing wow " ok that lasted 2 weeks". I am looking for a decant mmorpg for a casual gamer, work and life take most of my time so end game raids and 8 hours of play time are gonna be scarse. i more interested in the social aspect and a smaller family type guild and PvE.

Im evidently missing something or does the trial not allow you to talk to other players ?? im trying to get a feel for interface and chat commands.

Are there many folks on GW that remember the 70's , ok im old.

thanks in advance

The trial is very limited in it's interaction with other players and a few other things (storage?). This, as far as I know, is to prevent gold sellers from using trial accounts. (Gold sellers, as you may know from other games, sell in-game gold for real-life money.)

There are many players in GW that remember the 70s - some of us would even remember the 60s, if we could.

Btw, GW is very "casual player" friendly. You can play alone, if you want, by using Heroes and Henchmen. (Heroes are customizable henchmen)

I"m 60+ and remember everything, I think.

This is a great game for the casual player. You can proceed at your own pace with no penalties for not playing. We have people who log back in every six months and (barring hackers) their account is just as they left it. Also, there are no uber weapons or armor to obtain and no levels past 20. This game is about obtaining skills and learning to use them efficiently in a team (real people, heroes, or henchmen). There is NO monthly fee. The only things sold in the ingame store are vanity items, character slots and storage panes. Nothing that affects your gameplay.

As for a guild, you can post your wants in our Guild section under "PvE looking for Guild" and browse the posts by guilds in their subforum.

We have a wiki (F10 or Help in game) at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

The Campfire section has sub forums for each profession with "basic" threads.

many thanks for the quick reply good sir, i figured the trial was limited in ways but figured the chat would work so i could at least get some in-game input from other players, but i like what i have seen well enough i think ill go buy a full version this week sometime. im reading as much as i can but with the full version are there server options ?? and if so what is a well populated PvE server for US Central time zone ?

and yeah i remeber gold spammers one of the downfalls of these games.

and i did always hear if you could remember the 60's you either were not really there or in a convent/monistary Just Kidding dont smite me to hard

There are no servers per se, there are districts where you can meet up with people, but there is no restriction as to what district you can go.

American districts are most populated nowadays.

The most popular server is the North American one as it is the most heavily populated. But you are free to switch servers whenever you like with no conditions or penalties.

Check online for the Trilogy version which contains all three campaigns. Newegg.com has it for under $40 and they carry the Eye of the North expansion for $11.

Helpful people are sparse most of the time. I'd suggest finding a helpful Guild who are willing to teach a new player the ropes.

Also, I'd suggest getting the Guild Wars Trilogy. It'll give you all 3 campaigns for a fair price.

Guild Wars servers aren't like servers in other games. You can see everybody on every server. Rather than "realms" where only a portion of the players are and where you're (typically) stuck, there are "districts" in towns that you can switch at will.

Edit: Seriously? Beat to it like 3 times.

If you like it...you can purchase Prophecies for a relatively low price in some stores (10 bucks) from what I've seen.

Thanks again all: looks like ill get the trilogy and eye of the north from newegg this week, they even have free shipping going on

on factions and nightfall since these are campaigns not expansions will i be using them much at start ??

eye of the north is a expansion that brings in the 2 new races. can i start out my first toon as a norn ??

and while i enjoy grouping and helping others out i do spend a lot of time soloing and was thinking of a War/Necro closest thing to a ShadowKnight i could figure out.

thanks again all

Nope, you won't be able to cross over right away. It'll take a while before you can reach the continents that the other campaigns are on, no matter where you start.

Also no, the other races are NPC only.

You'll have a tough time coughing up the energy for Necro skills with a Warrior. Dervish/Necro might be doable and would, thanks to the whole robe&scythe look of Dervishes, also have the coolness-factor that you seem to be looking for. This means you'd have to start with a Nightfall character though.

EDIT:

Not that Warrior/Necro is necessarily bad. It can actually be quite good, provided you run 6 Warrior skills, Plague Touch and Res Signet.

I did some more reading and the Derv sound like i would enjoy it, but if i start in nightfall does that mean i wont be able to go back and run through prophecies and faction ?? that i would actually lose out on doing those campaigns ??

No you can go to all campaigns with all characters. It's just that you can only start a ritualist or assassin in factions and a dervish or paragon in nightfall. You can still go to the other campaigns.
